Chapter Twenty-eight

NICKI HAD SETH drive around the apartment complex once before parking. She wanted to make sure all the lights to Sean’s place were out. They were, but Nicki still felt nervous.

She leaned over to Seth again and invited him in to another kiss. God, she could almost do just that all night long. But she had other plans. She pulled back a little and said, “We have to be super quiet, okay?”

“Got it.” Seth shut off the engine and they got out. In the cold darkness, every step sounded loud to Nicki. The crunch of her shoes on the leftover snow in the parking area, the clang of the metal steps up to the second floor, the sound of her breath. But she knew it was her consciousness making her aware of sounds, even though they weren’t noisy.
